In
the summer of 1954, two friends were looking forward to going
touring in an old car one had just bought and when the question
of accommodation came up, towing a rented caravan was suggested.
A Bluebird Wren, 10ft long and with hardboard sides was all that
could be found and a wonderful holiday was enjoyed, giving Alwyn
Wilson food for thought.
The
following year he and his brother bought two caravans and started
a small rental business. The threat of petrol rationing due to
the Suez Crisis of 1956 almost brought the tiny business to an
early close but gradually the hire fleet enlarged to a dozen caravans
and land was bought in Low Moor, Bradford.
Wilson
Caravans (Bfd) Limited was formed in 1961 and in 1962 the sale
and repair of caravans was started. Early agencies were for Astral,
Robin, Thomson, Sandringham, Donnington, Creighton and many other
makers, mostly now unheard of. At that time over 70 small manufacturers
made up the caravan market, so choices were very wide and in some
cases rather unusual. New caravans started at £209 which
seems very little, although the average wage was only about £10
a week.
The
current site in Mirfield was bought by Wilson's in 1963 and throughout
the 60's both sites were steadily developed.
In
1973 the company was sold to the Gailey Caravan Group and Alwyn
Wilson stayed until 1975 before deciding he needed a rest. In
1976, refreshed, he bought Kenmore Caravans at Birkenshaw. Kenmore
went from strength to strength and Alwyn was joined by son, Robert
and daughter, Sally. Both have remained with the company building
an enviable knowledge of caravans.
The
purchase of the Mirfield site for a second time was completed
in 1998 and all business gradually transferred to this attractive
and convenient depot, committed to looking after the interests
of caravanners young and old.
